Before BioShock was BioShock, it was System Shock: a completely weird combination of RPG and FPS, and one that it’s second (and best) iteration told the story of a rogue AI on a haunted spaceship – that rogue AI Being an incomplete uppercase shodan. The murderous artificial consciousness certainly paved the way for GlaDOS, but its meaningful character advancements, rewarding exploration, terrifying enemies, and (at the time) novel use of audio diaries that make System Doc 2 such a memorable horror game. Metro Exodus is packed into several games inviting Russia’s apocalyptic slices: it’s a story-focused family drama, as much as a Wolfenstein heavy metal-framed FPS. However, there are a lot of routes to the spine-tingling horror game sequence, which ends the climactic metro exodus.
The 4A Games’ irradiated outing allows you to choose whether you want the thrill of Artiome to be a gun-banging attack or a secret case submerged in darkness due to the game’s day/night mechanic. But, if you choose to sleep through daylight to creep up on your opponents in the dark of the pitch, expect a very scary experience. Human enemies may be on the back foot, but a watchman’s shout or a humanimal charge is sorely unstable.
Still, as we mentioned in our review of the Metro Exodus PC, it is a game that is most terrible when the rules are changed. The early stages of the game teach you to extinguish the light and master the shadow. Then, in spider-infected bunkers under the Caspian Sea, it becomes your weapon. Your Arachnid enemies are deadly vulnerable to light, so they think of any dim light crack. As his disgusting, hairy feet Best Open World games scratch badly against the walls, it becomes clear that, in Metro Exodus, you can never disappoint your guard.

Alien: Isolation is among the Free pc games. It’s a horror game about being stuck on a space station with a (spoiler) big scary alien, which, thanks to some devious AI and level design, is more terrifying than it ever has any right to be. As we discovered while writing our Alien: Isolation review, this horror game is effectively a first-person hiding simulator – your monstrous stalker can’t be beaten, shot, or bashed into submission.
The best horror games make you feel utterly powerless, and in Alien: Isolation it is your wits, your knack for crawling under desks and into lockers, and a variety of distractions that will save you from the hulking, Nigerian horror. A deadly creature who can appear at any moment, unscripted, and without warning: what more could you ask for from a horror game antagonist?

This is a horror game in which monsters are on you no matter what may happen, in which sneaking and hiding from these creatures is your only means of self-defense, and in which simply watching monsters can drive you crazy.
You almost literally curl into a ball and close your eyes when the demons of Amnesia: Dark Descent is in the room, using the audio cue to guess when they’ve left. Some scary games are as unnecessary as Amnesia: The Dark Descent, which clings to the golden rule of horror: fear of the unknown is the most powerful fear of all.
There is a sequel, Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, which is psychologically arresting. But we wouldn’t advise them to do mainlining one after the other – just as the main character of Amnesia, you need to manage your holiness.

Employing the ‘Found Found Footage’ style of contemporary horror cinema, Outlast is a first-person exploration game set inside an abandoned psychiatric hospital. Like all abandoned psychiatric hospitals in the horror game, it is populated by a cast of deranged patients and ruthless staff whom you must avoid surviving with all your courage still inside your body. These tropes can be well and truly incorporated into cinema, but horror games make the most of these clichés, and Outlast is proof of that.
To find your way around the dark corridors of the Outlast, you must be careful through the green-tinged infrared mode of your camcorder. This gives Outlast a uniquely terrifying visual identity while leaving you feeling insecure for the villains crawling behind you. Your camera batteries only last a few minutes, so it’s a small pity that the hospital you’re looking for is filled with batteries that fit the exact make and model of your camera. Oh, is that so.

The best horror game takes away the tension, so it’s just that you play the role of Leon Kennedy, who labors for one person under an agony, meaning he can only move around very slowly. As traditional shooters as they come, the whole focus here is on the rapidly growing arsenal of weapons with which to slaughter an army of Hell’s devils, upside-down facial spiders, and strange bears. The ID-Tech 4 engine was a testament to its promise, bringing the detail to an incredible level horror pc games, as was the array of flat brown sprites before it.
